Metatarsalgia is a general term for pain in the forefoot. The discomfort is usually felt underneath the forefoot, especially while walking.
What is metatarsalgia?
The foot is subjected to significant forces every day. With every step we take, the foot must absorb our body weight. We typically land on the heel and roll the foot forward. However, forefoot complaints can develop. In metatarsalgia, the problem is located at the underside of the metatarsal heads, often near the second and third toes. Metatarsalgia is a collective name for conditions affecting the metatarsal region, including issues such as hammer toes.
With metatarsalgia or hammer toes, the metatarsal bones become painful. As pressure increases on these bones during walking, inflammation and pain can occur.
